The Met media has quickly broken the internet since the iconic charity event commenced on Monday 6th May.
The event is also known as the Costume Institute Gala and is a massive fundraising event that celebrates the opening of a new fashion exhibition each year at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the benefit was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York’s high society.
Today, this memorable moment is easily one of the hottest tickets in town for the VIP calendar and invites the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art.
Each year a different dress code is chosen as the theme of the evening in order to tie in with the opening exhibition. Previous themes have included Punk, China and Heavenly Bodies. This year’s exhibition theme is Camp: Notes On Fashion. Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, told Vogue how Camp can ultimately define style without content.
Camp has become increasingly more mainstream in its pluralities — political camp, queer camp, pop camp, the conflation of high and low, the idea that there is no such thing as originality.

“The essence of camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration. The hallmark of camp is the spirit of extravagance. Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of 3 million feathers.” #susansontag #metgala #metcamp

Congratulations @harrystyles, you won #MetGala 2019. 🏆 ⠀ There’s a brilliance about the way Styles experimented with this feminine Gucci look – a tattooed torso visible through a sheer shirt complemented by just the right amount of ruffles. ⠀ ⠀ What made Styles’ outfit so special were the details that went into it. Fun fact: Styles only got his ears pierced a few days ago, after his stylist Harry Lambert discovered the earring on the Gucci website. ⠀ ⠀ “I think everyone was expecting Harry to be in sequins, bright colors, and a crown, but we decided on a different type of ‘camp’ that hopefully would surprise,” says Lambert. “Harry and myself went through all the fabrics, sketches, and ideas, and shared our favorites. From there, Gucci produced samples of these and fittings commenced.” ⠀ All that hard work definitely paid off. ⠀ ⠀ 📷: Getty

KATY PERRY LITERALLY LIT UP THE ROOM
Shining bright, Katy illuminated the event with her opening ensemble that turned her into a functioning chandelier.
The 34-year-old looked almost identical to Lumière from Beauty and the Beast in her over-the-top Moschino number, capturing all eyes throughout her entrance on the pink carpet.
Later, she transformed into an actual burger, complete with the classic fillings of beef, cheese and salad.
Her burger bun look unclipped to reveal a strapless green dress that mimicked lettuce and she wore matching flat shoes to accompany her unique look.
THE BEST PINK CARPET LOOKS
Without a doubt, the key colour throughout the evening was undoubtedly pink, with the carpet and background flowers themed accordingly to compliment each extravagant look.
Anna Wintour herself even wore a pink crystal-embellished feature-laden Chanel gown inspired by the Susan Sontag quote:
